Genki Fit is a social enterprise committed to promoting health, vitality, and community well-being, particularly in rural and regional Victoria. Established in 2009 by David Ellis, GenkiFIT was born out of David’s experience teaching in a small rural Japanese village. It was there that he saw the need for accessible health and fitness programs in regional communities that often lack the resources and infrastructure to support them. Inspired by the Japanese word Genki (元気), meaning health, energy, and vitality, David set out to create a business focused on empowering local communities to lead healthier, more active lives.
Since its inception, the Ellis family has dedicated themselves to providing fitness and dance classes to Smythesdale and the wider rural community. As Genki Fit grew, David’s passion was shared with his family. In 2019, when David embarked on a family trip around Australia, Jaymee took the reins of the business.
With over 10 years’ experience in the fitness industry, Jaymee specialises in delivering accessibility-friendly group fitness, low-pressure personal training, and community-based programs that prioritise confidence, connection, and long-term wellbeing. Her approach is grounded in the understanding that traditional fitness spaces can be intimidating, exclusionary, or inaccessible - particularly for people living in rural areas, those new to exercise, neurodivergent individuals, people returning to movement after injury or illness, and those facing financial or social barriers. Jaymee brings a wealth of expertise and passion to Genki Fit, having previously run her own dance and fitness business. She holds a Certificate IV in Fitness, as well as certifications in Pilates, Barre, Strong Nation, Boxing, Step, Circuit, and Reformer Pilates, offering a diverse range of classes suited for all fitness levels.
Alongside her fitness qualifications, Jaymee has a background in communications, community development, and youth engagement, and is currently completing postgraduate study in health promotion. This informs her holistic, strengths-based approach to health: recognising that wellbeing is shaped by social connection, environment, and opportunity, not just individual motivation.
At Genki Fit, we believe fitness should be inclusive, fun, and accessible.
